The school of economics have introduced the use of a new core textbook entitled ‘The Economy’ for use within the School’s compulsory modules. The textbook was introduced to address matters of inclusive practice:

  • The textbook allows greater equality of access as it is available online for free (as opposed to hard copies stored in the library, or students purchasing the textbook). The textbook is also currently available in five languages.
  • Ensuring that students are exposed to and involved in real world tasks which demonstrate meaningful application of essential knowledge and skills is key to inclusivity (Kingston University, inclusive curriculum framework). The textbook was adopted for use in economics, as it introduces economics and the economy in an engaging and student-centred way, providing real world data and built on a foundation of real-world problems.
  • The core textbook was chosen for the way in which it seeks to address key historical events, such as the industrial revolution or broader themes such as economic inequality.
  • The textbook also has an extensive glossary of subject specific terminology.

Core econ has an accompanying open access platform for those who wish to understand economics, specifically the economics of innovation, inequality and environmental sustainability. Read more about Core Econ.
